GFRIEND part ways with Source Music: members decide not to renew their contracts
All the members of the K-pop group (Yuju, Yerin, Eunha, Sowon, SinB, and Umji) are leaving their agency after six years of their debut. Sad surprise for K-pop fans, the acclaimed girlband GFRIEND will be parting ways with their agency Source Music six years after their debut. The news hit first on Korean media on May 18 KST by HYBE‘s subsidiary.
The company reports that the six famous Koreans of the K-pop girl band will be disengaging from their management as of May 22 KST, the date on which the exclusive representation contract will end. As they share, the decision was taken by common agreement, after extensive deliberation, with the aim that each party strengthen their path in different ways.
Source Music expressed that the idols “will begin their adventures in new and diverse areas.” However, they did not specify if the girls would definitely disband or if the fans could expect a group ‘comeback’ in the future. “The exclusive artist contract with GFRIEND and Source Music will conclude on May 22. After careful consideration and extensive discussion, GFRIEND and Source Music have reached an agreement to go by separate ways towards continued growth. Over the past six years, GFRIEND has earned the boundless love of K-pop fans through a wide range of concepts, performances, and songs that marked a new generation of girl groups and music“.
“We would like to express our most sincere and true thanks to GFRIEND, who has allowed Source Music to be by their side on their journey. We would like to deeply thank all the BUDDYs and fans who have shown their love for GFRIEND, and we ask that you give your unchanging love and support to the girls who will begin their adventures in new and diverse areas“.
“Source Music will always continue to cheer on the members as they take the first step towards new beginnings. Thanks” they concluded. Hours before the announcement of GFRIEND part ways, Yuju made a post on Weverse, where she recalled her debut and how nervous she felt taking a new step in her life.
What will happen to GFRIEND’s name? This is another key question as the girlband is moving away from its original agency. According to a report by the Korea Herald, Source Music is the administrator of the English and Korean trademark so, the fans are really worried about the future of the group.
Who are GFRIEND?
It is a K-pop group made up of six members: Sowon, Yerin, Eunha, Yuju, SinB, and Umji. They had a successful debut on January 15, 2015 with the song “Glass bead.” Three years later, exactly on May 22, 2018, they started their career in the Japanese market with the album ‘GFRIEND 1st BEST‘. The aforementioned material compiled six Korean hits of the group reverted in Japanese and had as its main theme “Me gustas tu”.
